CARIBBEAN DIVE JEWEL IN CENTRAL AMERICA

The Bay Islands in Honduras are a divers hub. While Utila is a hotspot for open water students and divemaster trainees, Roatan is the place for your dream liveaboard trip.

Honduras is a country in Central America. It is bordered to the west by Guatemala, to the southwest by El Salvador, to the southeast by Nicaragua, to the south by the Pacific Ocean at the Gulf of Fonseca, and to the north by the Gulf of Honduras, a large inlet of the Caribbean Sea.

The interesting area for divers is the Bay Islands on the Caribbean side. The most popular of the Bay Islands is Utila and Roatan.

The Islands are part of the second-largest barrier reef in the world, the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef and therefore have large and colorful coral reefs, multi-colored tropical fish and even pelagic animals like pilot whales and manta rays. From February to April whale sharks can be spotted. 

BEST TIME TO VISIT HONDURAS

The Bay Islands are a year-round diving location with warm temperatures around 29°C. From May to September, and June through October is hurricane season in the Caribbean. The water temperature has an average of 25°C in winter and 29°C in summer and the visibility is generally good.

If you want to have the chance to see whale sharks, visit the islands between February and April.

BEST DIVE SPOTS IN HONDURAS

Utila is a laid-back island, mainly attracting backpackers. It is well-known for doing dive courses from open water diver up to dive instructor. The prices for fun diving and courses are low and if you get certified here you will have a great time with funny people. The reefs are colorful and the diving is easy and relaxed. Roatan has very famous and beautiful dive spots like Mary’s Place. With narrow canyons, black coral, huge sea fans and abundant wildlife, this dive spot has something for everybody. Another excellent dive is the El Aguila Wreck, a cargo ship that was sunk for divers to explore. Divers can explore colorful corals and lush marine life.

LIVEABOARDS IN HONDURAS

There is only one liveaboard cruise at the moment, the Roatan Aggressor. This cruise will take you around the Bay Islands, including Utila, Roatan and Cayos Cochinos, another of the islands. You will see sheer walls and mystical wrecks, massive barrel sponges, captivating macro critters, whale sharks, bottlenose dolphins and more. The facilities onboard are outstanding and great for underwater photographers.
