Silver Bank

SWIMMING WITH HUMPBACK WHALES

It´s a dream of many people – swimming with humpback whales. On a liveaboard cruise to the Silver Bank, you can make your dream come true.

The Silver Bank is a submerged bank 100 km from the north coast of the Dominican Republic and southeast of the Territory of Turks & Caicos. In 1996 the area was declared as a Sanctuary for Marine Mammals as humpback whales come here every year for breeding and calving.

The males will not only entertain the females here but also snorkelers. Snorkeling with the whales will be offered with special tours. Diving with whales is not permitted in the Silver Bank Marine Sanctuary in case the whales see the bubbles as a threat.

BEST TIME TO SWIM WITH THE WHALES

The best time to see the whales is from January to April as this is the time when the humpback whale females come to give birth. Also, it´s the start of a new mating season. The Silver Bank becomes home to the biggest whale gathering in the world.

LIVEABOARDS IN THE SILVER BANK

Liveaboard operators offer special whale watching tours to explore an ones-in-a-lifetime-experience with the humpback whales. Listen to the whales singing, watch their gracefulness and feel the vibes of these beautiful animals while snorkeling. Luxury liveaboards usually take you on a 7-night-trip with two day-trips by chase boat every day to look out for the whales. All the encounters are carefully regulated with procedures laid out by sanctuary management, for the safety of visitors and whales alike. A maximum of 10 people per chase boat are allowed to make the whale encounters a small and intimate moment in your life.
